Understanding Your Eye Care: Routine vs. Medical
At Ludlow Eye Associates we provide both routine vision exams and medical eye care — two types of visits that serve different purposes. Knowing the difference helps you make informed choices and understand how your insurance applies.
Routine Eye Exams
A routine or comprehensive vision exam focuses on assessing your eyesight and updating your prescription for glasses or contact lenses. During this visit, we:
- Measure visual acuity (how clearly you see)
- Determine your eyeglass prescription or contact lens prescription (additional contact lens evaluation fees apply)
- Evaluate overall eye health through a thorough screening
- Discuss preventive eye care and visual comfort
These visits are typically billed to vision insurance and are recommended annually for most patients.
Medical Eye Care
Medical eye visits address specific eye health conditions, symptoms, or diseases.
These include problems like:
- Redness, pain, or sudden changes in vision
- Dry eyes, allergies, or infections
- Diabetes-related eye exams
- Glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration monitoring
- Eye injuries or foreign body removal
Medical eye visits are billed to your medical insurance, similar to a visit with your family doctor or specialist.
In short:
- Routine Eye Exam = Clear vision & updated prescription
- Medical Eye Care = Diagnosis & treatment of eye health issues
